MG Lecture Series @ DFS: Plastic Pollution–It’s Everybody’s Problem!

Walton County Master Gardeners Lecture Series presents

PLASTIC POLLUTION: It’s everybody’s problem

Dr. Laura Tiu, Marine Science Agent for Walton and Okaloosa Counties will discuss Micro Plastics, a new term which is being tossed about, but what’s with all the fuss? The rise of plastic use can be traced from the production of celluloid combs of the early 1900’s to the explosion of plastic production after World War II, to the introduction of bottled water in the late 1980’s.  After nearly a century of plastic production, we have discovered negative environmental impacts that we never anticipated.  Now the questions are: how bad is it and what can we do to combat our plastic addiction?  Discover the dangers of micro plastics and how gardeners can adopt sustainable practices to reduce these pollutants in the environment.

The program will be held at the UF/IFAS Walton Extension Office on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.  The location is 732 N 9th Street in DeFuniak Springs.  The cost will be $5, payable at the door (cash only, please).  Light refreshments will be served.  Space is limited and reservations are required. Please contact Cheryl at 850-892-8172 or haneyc@ufl.edu by the Monday before to reserve your place.

Master Gardeners will be on hand to take gardening questions and help with soil samples.  There is an $8 fee, including shipping, to submit soil samples to the University of Florida for analysis.  Master Gardeners are at the location Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until noon.
